For this project, we were tasked with creating a set ready prop. We picked Star Trek to base it on, and embarked on the long process to create our ‘time capsule’. To begin, we experimented with 3D forms out of foam and polystyrene. After that, we planned out the logistics of functionality and having it open to reveal the acrylic inner. The base is vacuum formed plastic over a metal bowl (cut in half with ban saw). The handles and structural parts are laser cut MDF. The middle is laser cut and engraved acrylic, and the top detail is laser cut out of a second hand plastic laptop stand. All the parts were primed, airbrushed grey, then finished with metallic spray. The hardest part was getting all the measurements right on the illustrator files (especially the angle of the curve). This took a lot of trial and error. As well, we figured out how to create a seamless opening effect using rubber bands and magnets, after a lot of trialling. Overall we were both really happy with the end result.

For our costume, we both decided we wanted to make a neck and shoulder piece. First we started off using a women’s bodice block, and traced off patterns from the manakin. We then used this pattern to cut out of eva foam. We then heat formed the foam over metal pipes to create curved shapes for the shoulders. From then on we glued, primed and air brushed the costume. We added final details such as embroidery, cut outs and macrame pendant. The hardest part was keeping it all together during glueing and heat forming. I enjoyed doing the finishing details the most.

Spatial Design Project

Proposal for the Performance Arcade

This project was an exploration in sound, lighting and immersive experiences. During this class, I learnt a lot through exploration and testing in Space Lab. Playing with lighting rigs and colour combinations, as well as digital and analogue projections. Sound was also used to create unique experiences for an audience. I became familiar with Resolume Arena software during this project. For my proposal, I aimed to create a user based projection and sound experience where the public engage with a control panel. Consequently offering them different visuals and sound. I enjoyed how much exploration I was able to do in this project. I aim to refine this idea and make it into a real proposal in the future.

Origami Lamp

For this project I was tasked at creating a lamp with only this paper material, clear acrylic, and a light bulb fitting. There was to be no tape or glue involved. I decided to do this large origami structure after trialling some small scale versions. Using 14 metres of material and cutting into 4 long strips, I managed to create enough length. I then designed the illustrator file to have slots to match the paper folds. After laser cutting the acrylic, I then teased the structure into the slots and eased it into a circle formation. This way the acrylic perfectly balanced the paper through gravity, with the light fixture holding everything up.
